Updated April 2014: Changes in surroundings necessitated moving the box to a more accessible spot. Updated October 2019: Due to changes in surroundings. Updated April 2020: It seems there is some discrepancy in the original source material as opposed to what's available now. But there's also some discrepancies there as well... Not something I would normally change as it makes solving it a bit more of a challenge - but I decided to tweak the clue anyway.

My dearest John,

As I write this brief letter to you, I know full well that it will be at least a few years before you read it and comprehend the event of which it describes. As I gaze at you sleeping in your bed, it is hard to believe that you are almost five years old now and that your father passed away just over a year ago. It is my hope that this letter will serve as a window into a memorable time in my own life, that you can open as time permits and keep alive the memory.

Almost 10 years ago was a day that was one of the most difficult and rewarding in my life. The battle had been going on for about 3 years and as your father became involved, I was surely prepared to do my part to help when needed. But even I could not foresee the challenges that lay ahead. On one particular day as the struggle played on, I was doing my part to support the effort, the sweat pouring from my brow until I felt ready to faint. Then it happened. During the melee that surrounded us, my beloved William, your father, was felled. What was I to do now? I tended to him as the battle raged around us. But, as fate would have it, my help was needed elsewhere and putting my fear aside I arose to the occasion. There I stood, side by side with those around me, it mattered not that I was different from them because now I was one of them. I continued on for the remainder of the day and as the battle ended, we had the upper hand. I often wonder, what, if anything, would be remembered of that day. As I think back on those days now and hear the sounds of the battle rage on in my mind, they seem not as real as they once had....but sound as if they are Echoes from the Past.

My love always, Mother

Find the place where she played her part. Once there, find the spot that she found. Take a seat on the bench if you like and then walk over to the view and read all about it. When done, turn and walk back the way you came. As you step back onto the dirt take about 12 average steps and stop. Turn left and walk 15 steps to the right end of a downed tree. From that spot walk past and behind the downed tree for 15 steps to a big tree. Go to the rear of that tree. Please re-hide the box better than you found it. Bring your own ink, black is suggested.

Since this is slightly off-trail, be prepared for the possibility of ticks.
