Pura Vida Letterbox

Located at Play Avellana, Guanacaste province, Costa Rica. The beach is a little over 6 miles south of Tamarindo in the northwest region of Costa Rica. This beach is famous for its surfing, and the swells can be as high as 18 feet! An unusual attraction is the resident pig, Lola, who must eat leftovers from the beach’s bar because she's reputed to be over 800 lbs. I don’t blame her - the pizzas are excellent.

Directions:
Most visitors get to the area flying into Liberia, Costa Rica, and then driving through Santa Cruz, then Tamarindo, and on to the beaches. After you find the letterbox, you may want to continue to Playa Negra to witness the world-class surfing there.

After parking and admiring Lola, head onto the beach and turn North (right). You will walk along the beach approximately 200 yards, looking for a path into a tree-shaded area on your right. If you continue walking Northeast, veering away from the beach, you will find a boardwalk that leads through the estuary. Stand on the first board and face the ocean again. Now head northwest, taking a diagonal path toward the ocean. You will see the posts of an old barbed-wire fence as you near the tree line. Counting seven more posts back from the one closest to the water, you will see a tree lying almost horizontally. At the base of the tree, under the shade of the trunk, you should find the letterbox, partly buried in sand and covered with a few stones.

Make sure no one is watching you – things have a way of disappearing at the beach, and I am hopeful that the letterbox will last until our return. The area does get covered with water during storms, so make sure it is tightly closed, partly buried, and hidden with rocks when you are finished signing and stamping in.

Congratulations & Thanks for Visiting! Vive la Pura Vida!
