ROCKWOOD "WALL" TREASURE BOX

Features: Easy loop trail for all ages, about 30 minutes, spectacular Hudson River views (see Manhattan to the south), gorgeous sunsets, can bring picnic/blanket, historical Rockefeller ruins.

Background: Rockwood Hall was the home of William Rockefeller (1841-1922), brother of John D. Rockefeller. In 1886 he bought the 200-acre estate and castle to be his summer home. He increased the size of the estate to more than 1,000 acres, imported stone masons from Scotland, master wood carvers from Switzerland, gardeners from England, horticulturists from Japan and employed the best American artists and craftsmen. Rockwood Hall included a three-story coach stable, a farm barn, a hennery, 17 greenhouses and a steel bridge spanning the New York Central Railroad tracks from the estate to a two-story boat house on the Hudson River. After William’s death the property languished and the Rockefellers had the buildings razed in 1942. In the ‘70s, Laurance Rockefeller leased the property to New York as a public park for $1 a year and underwrote the maintenance costs. In 1999 he donated the property to New York as part of Rockefeller State Preserve.

Jacalube's letterbox will take you to this area in a town called Sleepy Hollow about 10 minutes south of the town of Chappaqua.

Directions:
--South on Sawmill Parkway to Exit 29: Pleasantville/117
--Left turn at stop sign (Route 117)
--Bear right onto Route 117 (you are going west)
--"Pace" yourself past the college on the right
--Pass Rockefeller Park and Preserve
--Keep left "Rockwood Rd"
--Pass under Freedom Bridge
--Go through small intersection, park in lot immediately on left

To Letterbox:
--Cross in the pedestrian crosswalk and walk up the path
--Bear right. You will be looping around this trail down toward the river and the entire way back to where you are now
--Pass gigantic tree on right (fun to go under canopy)
--Continue through footprint of original Rockwood Hall (see Manhattan to your left by walking up to the rock wall)
--Continue on loop path, veer left down toward river
--Path forks at bottom, go left, river directly on your right
--Eventually you will come upon a 20-25 foot rock wall on your right. The letterbox is hidden in the base of the wall, facing you, lightly buried under leaves.

Please be extra sure to put the box back, hidden in exactly the same place, the same way. Please click on the flag on this site so I know you found it and write to us!
