Letterbox Name: The Great American Pin-up Series: Evelyn
Location: Grayslake, IL
Distance: Not Applicable

Once upon a time, there were eight lovely sisters. They were born in Lake County, Illinois, and were raised in an old farmhouse. They grew tall and strong and, though they loved the home in which they’d been raised, each knew that there would come a time when she would need to go out and find her place in the world.

Evelyn was a beautiful lady who loved books. She loved stories, and poetry, and art. And as much as she loved the words within, she loved everything about books. The feel of the paper as she turned from one page to the next, the weight of a good hard-bound volume, the smell of old, antique tomes, lovingly preserved for future generations to enjoy. And in much the same way as her sisters enjoyed the forests, hills, and lakes in Lake County, Evelyn was drawn to the small towns and city streets. So it was no surprise that, when she started to think about where she might find a new home, her first thoughts were of bookstores and libraries.

So Evelyn began, in her own meticulous way, to research her alternatives. She pored over books and phonebooks and guides, sitting at the dining room table into all hours of the night. One night, as Evelyn worked to finalize her plans, she was surprised by cool, slender fingers reaching around to cover her eyes.

“Boo!” whispered her sister, Raven, as she pulled her hands away and took a seat at the table, near Evelyn.

Evelyn smiled. She knew it had gotten late, and Raven’s playful entrance was a welcome break from her planning.

“So where are you off to?” asked Raven matter-of-factly.

“I’ve found the perfect spot in downtown Grayslake. It’s a charming bookstore which specializes in used and rare books.”

“That definitely sounds like the place,” offered Raven. “You’ve always seemed most at home around books.” Raven smiled to herself, and paused.

“So what are you doing up this late?” asked Evelyn. In truth, she knew exactly why Raven was up late. The two of them were both night owls. Of course, where Evelyn’s late nights involved a good book and candlelight, Raven’s involved magic and, well, candlelight.

“I’ve been working on something new. I was actually hoping you might be able to help.”

“Oh. I’m not so sure, Raven,” replied Evelyn. The last time that Raven had gotten help from one of her sisters, she’d turned Mandy into a cocker spaniel for a week. And there was that other time, where she’d made Mirage disappear, then re-appear in another part of the house.

Raven laughed, and the sound echoed softly in the quiet darkness of the old farmhouse. “Don’t worry, Evelyn. It’s a book that I’m looking for. I thought you might be able to help me locate it.”

Evelyn looked at her sister over the top of her glasses, interested in what would come next.

“It’s an old book. It’s called “Flights of Fancy: A Guide to Broomsticks and Their Less Domestic Applications.” It was published in 1832.” As she finished, Raven looked hesitantly at her sister. While she had always dreamed of flight and dabbled in the odd magic spell, Raven had never been so bold as to actually admit that she’d been practicing witchcraft. It was one of those things that all of the sisters suspected, or even knew. But no one talked about it.

“So you want me to find you a book on witchcraft?” asked Evelyn, with a tinge of excitement in her voice.

“Yes,” replied Raven cautiously.

“I’d be happy to.” And the two began to talk about just what their plans for the future were. Raven confided in Evelyn about her desire to fly across the night sky, and Evelyn tried to explain her passion for books and learning and the meaning of words. They realized, perhaps for the first time, just how much they had in common. And as the candles burned down and the sun rose in the eastern sky, they both went to bed and dreamed of the adventures which lay ahead.

The next day, Evelyn located Raven’s book, and gave it to her as a gift. “You know where to find me, anytime. I’ll always be glad to help.” The two hugged, then Evelyn picked up her slim bag and walked out the door, to her new home in the bookstore. When she arrived there, she took her place on a shelf behind the counter, surrounded by books, classic and modern.

She waits there for you, but there is a catch. You see, Raven also gave Evelyn a gift on that day when Evelyn left home. She placed a protective spell on her, to ensure that she would remain safe in her new home. The Great American Pin-up series is, first and foremost, a celebration of the style, femininity, and fun of pin-up art over the years. While great care was taken to select images that would not offend, it’s worth noting that some letterboxers, including those traveling with younger children, might find the images to be “rated PG”. That said, we hope that you enjoy the images as much as we’ve enjoyed selecting and carving them.

Please note: The stamps are a bit large, and will require a 4”x 6” space for stamping. We also strongly recommend inking pens, to bring out the full detail of the stamps.
