Difficulty: moderately hilly
Location: A short hike from parking.
Distance: Probably under 30 yards from parking lot
Elevation: sloped but mowed grass
Materials: Bring your own stamp pad, log book, stamp.

This box is hidden near the Wayne National Forest headquarters, along US Route 33 between Athens and Nelsonville.

Start in beautiful downtown Nelsonville, a community near Athens along US Route 33. Find the intersection of East US 33 and the one way entrance into the Wayne National Forest HQ parking lot. The building was designed to recall the look and shape of an old mining operation. The fire tower extends much higher than the HQ building and can be seen from around a curve or two before arriving. Park in any slot in the parking lot that you can, nearest the patio and picnic tables is best. Your goal is on the hillside behind the office building main structure.

ALTERNATIVE DIRECTIONS FROM ATHENS ALONG US 33:
[Watch for the Headquarters on the right of US 33 about 2.5 miles north of The Plains interchange, Route 682.

You may NOT climb the fire tower. It is off limits to all access, except by scheduled permission by the forest rangers. A 10 foot wooden security fence surrounds the base of the tower, so look, but don't attempt to scale or climb it.

To find the LB: There are two large, massive Oak trees holding the hillside behind the building. You will not be able to walk to these trees unobserved. So, wander a bit. Walk along the gravel path. Examine the flower beds. Look up at the tower. Check out the kiosk. Eventually, walk up to the massive tree closest to the tower, and look for the LB at the base of the tree. You can be observed by the people in the building, so be prepared to answer questions.

Bring a stamp pad and your logbook, and your own stamp. You could retrace your steps to reach a bench or other location with the stamp, or just quickly do your log business right there. Please reseal the baggies and return all content back into the letter box, closing it for the next person, and carefully consealing.

If the logbook is full or if the LB is missing, please contact me to advise. Enjoy!
