*****LOST!! We will make a new one to replace it. Do not attempt to find this letterbox!*************

Although our paths may have crossed many times at Western Illinois University, we never actually met until later on. But that’s another story. This story is about a little dog, his name is Rocky. Rocky the Bulldog is the mascot for Western Illinois University athletic teams. This two-legged caricature had its start in 1958 when a live four-legged English Bulldog, purchased by Student Government, was marched throughout the football stadium during home games. He was named "Colonel Rock" in honor of Western’s legendary Athletic Director and Coach Ray "Rock" Hanson, a Marine colonel. Western Illinois is the only public school in the U.S. that has permission through the Department of the Navy to use the United States Marine Corps official seal, mascot (the bulldog) and nickname, The Fighting Leathernecks. We were both proud members of the Marching Leathernecks, WIU’s Marching Band, and cheered on our fighting leathernecks in their games.

For more information, check out the Western Illinois University website www.wiu.edu.

Since this is our first box, we decided to make it an easy find, especially considering the weather conditions. “Go Necks!” is located at the Marching Leatherneck’s Practice Field on the corner of Adams Street and Northwestern Avenue. Park on Adams Street right next to the field. As you look onto the field you will see a place where the marching leathernecks cheering section may sit. We would often sit here for a break during our many hours of practicing. Sit on the third row of bleachers and slide all the way to your right. Under your feet you will find rocky cheering on the band.
