(Trails no longer open to letterboxing)

Begin your letterboxing quest at the nature center at Genesee Country Village & Museum. Please go inside the nature center building, check in and ask for a map. We allow letterboxing folks one free visit to the nature center but we ask that you sign our book. Thanks.
Proceed out the back door to the amphitheater area and stand at the southwest side of the firepit. Walk towards a cool shady spot or in winter, a short trail that leads gently upward. Continue on the trail a short distance until you reach a shagbark hickory tree. Stand at the sign and take a 160 degree bearing and walk about eight steps. As you walk, you may find a hickory nut, pick it up and smell it, very nice, really. Now take the upward trail that has no signs, stop when you reach a tree on the left that has at least five manmade holes in it about 5/8 of an inch in diameter. What kind of tree is it? What are those holes for? If you're here in March, you will certainly know! Now keep on walking, watch for rocks in the trail. In the spring you may see myriads of may apples. Keep heading south until you come to a "T" in the trail and see a number of fallen logs. Take a 210 degree bearing (right) and proceed past the grape vines and a few interpretive signs. Sit on the bench and take a quick rest. Walk up the hill past the very old barbed wire on the right, please don't touch. Check out all the flint and chert on the trail, does anyone know what this hill is called? Flint Hill! At the top of the hill you will see a sign, look for the tree mentioned. Walk to the tree, be careful, you are now "off trail". How many of you does it take to circle the tree? Now stand on the North side of the tree. Look for a large rock made of flint and limestone. Do you see a "Y" shaped branch on the ground nearby? Close to the branch is what you seek. Return to the sign and the trail. Return the way you came or be adventurous and follow the trail forward. Hopefully you received a map at the nature center and can see where you are. All of the trails are loop trails so you should be able to find your way home. Enjoy!
