Go to the Island Creek Forest Walk off N.C. 1004, just outside of New Bern. You can pick up a pamphlet at the Ranger Station off HWY 70 that describes the trees along the 1/2 mile loop. Start at the entrance of the trail and walk to the first marker (#1). From there follow the trail counterclockwise so the marking post count up as you go. Enjoy the Loblolly Pine and Yellow Poplar. Continue on to sign post 2,3, 4 and 5. Along the way you should past Dogwood, Black Walnut and Sweetgum trees. As you near sign post 5 you will start to see the creek coming in from your right. You’re on track and getting close, continue on and you will see a rock outcropping across the creek near sign post 6. Once you reach the Bald Cyprus at sign post 7 walk 14 paces and you will see a tree to your right with initials. From there walk 12 more paces and the trail will fork. Take the fork to the right keeping near to the creek, walk 46 paces. You will stop near 2 trees on the bank to your right where the creek turns quickly to the East. From there look straight ahead on the hill above and you will see 2 more trees overlooking the creek, about 12 paces from you. Look near the base of the tree to the right. Once you have found the box you can continue around the rest of the trail, Holly, Hickory and Oak await.
