For this letterbox you are a double agent in enemy territory. You are “in deep cover” and must recover the secret drop without being discovered.

This letterbox is also setup as hitchhiker hostel. It is in a very safe place so help fill up the hostel!

Before the clue, however, I have to point out the standard disclaimer stuff:
The letterbox is located in a public use area. Many residents visit the area and town employees work here as well. I ask that all letterboxers be polite, quiet, and discrete. To act otherwise is unbecoming of our hobby and simply inappropriate. It is also unacceptable. Use of this site is a privilege and if the box becomes a distraction or if someone chooses to act rudely, I WILL REMOVE IT.

Use of this clue, for any purpose or reason, means that you agree to not hold myself or any other person liable for the risks you decide to take while letterboxing. Be careful, be responsible, and letterbox at your own risk.

Now the clue.

Norwich Quadrangle
Village of Baltic
Town of Sprague
New London County
State of Connecticut
United States

Near the Events of 1957 letterbox:

Locate a small pine tree,
Look at its hue and color.

If the tree is green then you are good to go,
Proceed with discretion and don’t give it away.

If the tree is pink then your secret contact isn’t here,
You’ll need to try again another day.

If the tree is green your contact is here today. Approach and say:
Is that (referring to the pine tree) a sprig of acacia?

They say:
No, it is the cedar of Lebanon.

You say:
Where was it grown?

They say:
In America, do you know where it was planted?

You say:
In France, where will it fruit?

They say:
You tell me.

You say:
Anywhere Dr. Maturin opposes tyranny.

If you pull off your secret contact, you’ll receive “goods.” Be sure to give onlookers “the slip” and stamp in out of sight of bystanders. Return the contents, stealthily, back to whom you picked them up from.

>>Reference notes. The sprig of acacia and the cedar of Lebanon are symbols associated with the American Revolution. The American Revolution influenced the French Revolution. Dr. Stephen Maturin was a secret agent in Patrick O’Brian’s bestsellers. Spies often use transactions such as the above passage (also adapted from O’Brian) to tell friend from foe during clandestine meetings. Bond…James Bond 007.<<
