Portland is a great town for raising chickens. If you don’t believe me ask one of our many urban chicken farmers cropping up all over the city.

If you are interested in becoming a member of this growing population, this wikihow will fill you in on the basics: http://www.wikihow.com/Keep-Chickens-in-a-City.

Or, you could attend the 5th Annual Portland Tour de Coops happening this year on Saturday, July 26 and providing an inside look at some of the creative chicken habitats in Portland’s backyards: http://growing-gardens.org/portland-gardening-resources/chickens.php

Another great resource for urban chicken farming is Pistils nursery on N. Mississippi. This fun local garden store has everything you need to get started including the chickens. This is also the place to start your search for the Mississippi Chickens.

Find the paved alleyway behind Pistils and travel south past the back fence of the nursery where you may spot a few real live Mississippi chickens pecking in the gravel. Continue south and look ahead for a small mossy rock wall to the right. You will find Letterbox #1 (the Rooster) halfway along this wall and at the top of the pile roosted behind some loose rocks.

Continue south, and, in true chicken fashion, cross the road to get to the other side. Walk a little more than twenty steps into this second stretch of the paved alleyway and look left for where the old wooden garage meets the big cement building. Behind a rock you will find Letterbox #2 (the Hen) pecking in the dirt.
