Description: This is my first carved stamp and first box I have hidden. You will find my bee at the Genung Nature Preserve in Freeville, NY. In 2005, long-time Village of Freeville resident, Mildred Sherwood, donated her 53-acre former family farm to the Finger Lakes Land Trust in memory of her parents, Albert and Mildred Genung.

The trail wanders through shrubby areas, a grove of musclewood (or ironwood) trees along the bank of Fall Creek, some of the wildest hawthorn trees you will ever see, then larger hardwood trees such as swamp white oak, red oak, sugar maple, basswood and shagbark hickory. Listen and watch for the many birds that find the place a great refuge, especially in the spring — ovenbirds, northern waterthrushes, chimney swifts, northern rough-winged swallows, ruffed grouse and even pine warblers, to name a few. If you’re lucky, you may spot a four-foot tall great blue heron stalking fish and frogs in the creek

Directions:
From Ithaca take Rt. 13 north to intersection with Rt. 366. Turn left on Rt. 366 and continue through Etna to the Village of Freeville. Turn left at the stop sign onto Rt. 38. There will be a small parking area on your left approx 1/4 mile from the turn.

Clues:
There is a small trail that leads off the north side of the parking lot. Follow this trail.

There are small bends in the trail as you walk. You will come to a sharp turn to the right. You are going the right way.

Up the trail you will come to a bridge which crosses a ditch. Continue on to a second bridge that crosses another spring fed ditch.

From the second bridge you will come to an area where Fall Creek flows along your left side. About 80 paces up the trail (don't bother to count them out) you will find a small green bird house nailed to a tree on the left side of the tail.

You will see a hole in the bird house. It points toward a fallen tree about 20 paces away. Walk there.

The fallen tree will creat an X (sort of). Put your back to the X so you may point at the bird house with your left hand.

Now forget the pointing, just pace out 9 steps forward. These are adult size paces. Now "Bee" quiet while you are looking so you don't scare the birds.
