06/2/11: This box is RETIRED

Background:
Boxing Day, with a few exceptions, is traditionally celebrated on the day after Christmas, primarily as a holiday in the British Isles, Canada and Commonwealth countries. The holiday often involves the exchanging or opening of gifts or “boxes,” hence the name “Boxing Day.”

For fans of letterboxing, I’ve modified this tradition by planting a “Boxing Day” letterbox. True to the tradition, the container, which is a dark brown ammunition box, is filled with “stocking stuffers” for the first few finders. You are not expected to leave anything in return. Each year just before Boxing Day, the "stocking stuffers" in this letterbox will be replenished.

If you’re in need of some winter exercise or an excuse to leave the house or simply want to show your friends and family what letterboxing is all about, here’s an easy simple box for which to hunt. It’s literally a drive-by in the sense that you can leave your car engine running, although I’d recommend you turn it off if you’re environmentally conscious.

The clue:
From Interstate 70, take exit 124 and head north on Route E about three miles. The road will curve and twist in a northeasterly direction. Eventually, you’ll cross a bridge and pass Wilcox road on the right, then drive through a low water crossing area and cross over another bridge. Just after the second of these “Twin Bridges,” turn left on Driskel Road. If you start going up a large hill on Route E, you have missed Driskel.

Continue on Driskel for about a mile and a half. Soon after passing a log cabin on the right, you’ll finish ascending a steep hill, and reach the intersection of Driskel and Yeager road. Do not curve right as that will lead you onto Yeager. Instead do a minor zigzag to continue straight on Driskel and head down the side marked “Dead End.”

Continue a few more feet on Driskel until you reach the first house on the left (#5700). Turn left into the driveway and park in the turn-around space to the right of the driveway so as not to block access to the driveway (since this is a drive-by box, the owner has given permission for you to park there).

Exit the vehicle, walk back to Driskel road and face east (you should be facing in the direction of the intersection of Driskel and Yeagar). A few feet from the mailbox you will see a stump on the north side of the road. Your prize awaits inside. Search carefully as the stump pieces may be fragile.

Caution: In snowy conditions, the hill on Driskel may be slick and difficult to climb. Also, if there is snow on the ground, please try not to leave tell-tale footprints. There is not much traffic on Driskel (only five houses worth) but as always please be discreet in your letterboxing activities. Also, please try to make the stump look as natural as possible when you are finished.
Please drop me a line after you found the box.
