This box is on Catamount Hill, Bear Brook State Park. From Route 28 take Deerfield Road east to the entrance of the park. There will be a gatehouse on your right. You will have to pay a small fee during the summer to enter the park. Most of the spring, fall, and all of winter is free.

Park across the street from the gatehouse. Walk across the street to the gatehouse and find the nearby trail marked "One Mile Road - to all trails." You will soon come to an interseciton with a snowmobile corridor trail (see sign on a tree to the right). Go left. Go past the snowmobile museum sign and take your next right onto Catamount Trail (there is a sign, but it is somewhat hidden). Follow the yellow blazes up the hill.

Look out for the carcajou as you go up the hill. A carcajou is a large (can be up to 150 lbs) four legged creature with a long tail, tawny coat, and very sharp claws!

Near the top of the hill you will come to a large rock outcrop with a gorgeous view to the east. As you are looking east, turn around 180 degrees and walk towards the humongous lichen covered boulders. There's an easily visible crevice that looks like it would make a particularly good den site for a large carcajou. Approach the crevice very carefully. You never know what might be lurking inside!

Stick your arm behind the arrow shaped rock that is about twice the size of a basketball near the base of the crevice. There you will find your prize.

You may return the way you came or continue up Catamount Hill to complete a loop. To complete the loop, continue up the trail. You will soon come to a small clearing with a rock cairn. Take a left at the cairn onto a trail marked, "Catamount Hill Trail." You will immediately start descending the hill. The trail is still marked with yellow blazes. The trail will level off at the blue blazes marking the park boundary and will continue to the left. Shortly, you will come to a trail intersection. Continue straight on the trail marked "Shortcut - picnic area."

You will enter a pine stand. Continue straight through a small clearing, which was previously used as a log landing. Right after the clearing, you will reach the snowmobile corridor trail that you started out on. Take a left onto the trail. Perhaps a quarter of a mile down, you will see the snowmobile museum sign and the start of Catamount Trail. Continue on to your car the same way you came in.

We hope you enjoyed your carcajou adventure!
