The Spider Box is located in Blackwater Falls State Park.

From the Pendleton Overlook, walk to the southwestern-most point of the open grassy area (right-most point of the overlook view down to the Blackwater River). Here you will find a trailhead marked only by a sign which says "Caution Dangerous Area". This warning is not an idle one! The trail, which is not on the official park map, is a steep and treacherous path which provides access to the eastern side of the Falls of Pendleton. Beware! The trail is short, but can be very dangerous, especially after a rainstorm or with snow on the ground.

Follow the winding path downward. You will soon come to a cliff rising to your left, followed by a sharp right turn which leads to a beautiful overlook of the Blackwater. Past the overlook, the trail plummets down a steep and rocky run which requires some effort to traverse. As you work your way down the steep, look carefully for the trail taking a sharp turn to the left. Wash coming down the steep cuts a phantom path straight down the mountain, and it is easy to miss the turn if you aren't paying attention.

Taking this left off the steep, a large rock outcrop will rise to the left. The trail follows along the edge of the outcrop, before turning right and away from the rocks, and continuing downhill. Just as the trail turns, look at the cliff face immediately off the trail. Search for a cubbyhole within the cliff face, about 5 ft above the base of the cliff. The cubbyhole is hidden by a flat rock which is a slightly different shade than the cliff itself. Moving aside the rock, you will find your goal within the nook.

p.s. The total distance to the box is only about 1/4 mile, but can take some time to reach given the rocky terrain. The path is great fun for kids, but little ones will need some handholding and careful watching to make it down safely.
