The beautiful Soka University in Aliso Viejo is located on a hilltop surrounded by canyons with views in all directions. It is a small, private Japanese university with only 400 students, but it is spectacular.

From the #5 freeway go south on El Toro Road to turn left on Aliso Creek Road (travel 2.6 miles) turn right on Glenwood (travel .07 miles) to right on Wood Canyon Drive (travel almost 1 mile to turn right into the University entrance. Turn left into parking lot 'A'.

Walk to your right, cross the University entrance and go into the recreation center for a look at the gym. Outside you'll see the Olympic size swimming pool. Back to the street, take the walkway across the 'Lake' toward the Peace Fountain. Go up the stairs by Founders Hall and follow the walk past the reflecting ponds, toward the quad. You will pass Gandhi Hall, the student center and bistro. Continue toward the street and turn left to walk up the hill past dorms to turn right on Friendship Lane. You will pass the Athenaeum (museum) and continue walking toward the end of Friendship Lane. Walk on the arbor path to Friendship Circle. You will see a large palm tree beside the gazebo Stand at the base of that palm tree and look out toward the view. Directly in front of you, off the maintained landscape at 140 degrees SE, you will see a small pepper tree. Nestled at the base of the trunks of that tree, and covered with leaves, hides the Soka University Friendship Box. 'X' marks the spot. Please put it all back together, friend.

You can return to parking lot 'A' by walking down the south side of University Circle and enjoy different views. It's about the same distance either way.

For drive by letterboxers and for wheelchair letterboxers, you can drive around University Circle to park at Friendship Lane. Take the clues from there.

The bistro in the student center opens for lunch at 11:30 am, so go enjoy all you can eat for $9.

The stamp: The lion is the mascot of Soka University and symbolizes strength and courage.
The book obviously symbolizes knowledge and wisdom. The school colors ar gold, white and blue.
