WINDHAM DEPOT

Windham Depot holds a prominent place in New Hampshire railroad history, and within the town itself. Constructed in 1849, the Manchester & Lawrence Railroad established the first train service in Windham.

ROCKINGHAM RAIL TRAIL - WINDHAM, NH

This paved 4.1 Mile section starts from the intersection of Routes 111 and 28 in Salem continuing to a point on North Lowell Road, Windham. The parking lot in Windham is open from 1/2 hour before to 1/2 hour after sunset.

This is a scenic stretch of trail, which traverses by a farm pasture, apple orchard, two ponds and marshes, and is predominately wooded. There are two bridges that the trail crosses. One is built of New Hampshire granite as an archway and provides a unique architectural significance. Two high stone cuts provide a cool section of passing on hot days, and in the winter support multi-colored ice flow "sculptures.” The trail also passes several stonewalls, and a cellar hole from an 1800’s sawmill.

The Windham Depot buildings and surrounding town property has been designated a historic district by the Town of Windham in 2003.

DIRECTIONS: (Note: Rte. 93, Rte. 111, and Roulston Road are being rerouted by the State and the below directions may need to be updated once the mentioned roads are opened to the public.)

Starting from the Windham Depot, walk or bike the Windham Rail Trail until you see warning signs of a bridge (approximately 3.5 miles). From the first metal pole on the right side of the bridge (you’re heading toward Roulston Road – you’ll see the yellow gate in the distance), turn around facing the opposite direction (from where you came). Walk 20 or so paces. Stop and turn left facing the woods. Look for the nearest big rock. Under the flat stones immediately in front of the large rock, you’ll find your prize.

IF YOU WANT TO FIND THE REAL STONE ARCH BRIDGE:

From: Mark Samsel, Windham Rail Trail Alliance

Ah, one of our mysteries......it is easier to find when the leaves are down....head south from the Depot....after the bridge with the pipe railing, take a right (about 15 yards) down the trail follow (its a worn trail/rock rap leading down to the base/leave your bike at the top of the trail unless you want to lug it down and back up) at the base of the trail take a left.....safest method...

One clarification; once down the trail, you are bushwacking between the rail bed base and stone fence. Head South. If I send you from the trail directly over the bridge, after the initial 15 foot decline, it's straight down!
