Texas in the U.S.A.: 1845-1861; 1865-Present

Texas became the 28th state when it joined the United States in 1845 and flew the 28-star flag until more states joined. The capitol of the Republic of Texas was first moved to Austin in 1839 and after annexation it became the Capitol of the State of Texas. Except for the few years of the Confederacy, the "Stars & Stripes" has flown proudly with the Lone Star flag in Austin ever since. There are many parks in Austin but one of the best is Zilker Park, where this letterbox is hidden. There are many things to do in this park including: hiking, biking, picnicking, boating, miniature train riding and swimming in Barton Springs. So come see the Capitol city and enjoy one of its parks!

Directions:
Austin is located about 160 miles northwest of Houston. Zilker Park is located at 2100 Barton Springs Road which can be reached from I35 by exiting on Riverside Road and going west until it meets Barton Springs Road. Turn left until you come to the park, then turn left and park by the playground.

Clues:
From the playground, go across the RR tracks and down the stone steps to the left of Barton Springs pool. The playground dolphin points the way. Go left on the wide trail by Barton Creek toward the canoe rental shack. From there continue another 145 steps to a big tree where the path bends to the left. A drainage pipe and rock ledge will be up the bank on your left. If you cross the RR tracks near the underpass you have gone too far. Walk 12 steps up to the left side of the rock ledge farthest from the drainage pipe. Look under some loose stones to find the box. Be discreet since the area may be crowded and replace all the stones to keep the box well hidden.
