A long time ago, early as the sun was rising, I was driving east on Hwy. 175 through the morning fog from Hopland to Lakeport. Near the top of the grade about the spot you first see Clear Lake I saw a woman sitting by the side of the road. It’s a windy road, sometimes narrow and thickly grown over at its margins with native vegetation and trees. She was only a few feet from the road in the bushes in a vulnerable place. By the time my mind registered the woman I was many yards down the way. She’d looked middle-aged, a bit disheveled and had two or three plastic gallon containers of what I assumed was water. I didn’t stop to investigate, but wished I had for many hours during my business in Lake County. I worried about her in the desolate wilderness seemingly alone and promised myself if she were still there on my return over the mountain I would stop and check on her. I started driving up and west again about noon and when I thought I was at the right place to spy her she wasn’t there. I’d given up when I turned a corner and there she was looking much the same with her milk jugs and in her rumpled clothing. When I could I pulled over to the side of the road and hiked back up. When I got close enough to speak to her I asked, “Are you OK?”

“Yes," she replied, "I’m waiting for God.”

“Alright,” I muttered and was on my way. I think she said something else below the threshhold of my hearing. Since that day I have wondered what my duties were, if I should have “done something” about this person. You know, called some mental health professional or official agency. I mean, it’s not against the law to sit and wait for God, right?

Anyway, I hope God showed up in awhile and they caught up on old times, went to dinner and then maybe to a movie. Maybe drank a bit of that water.

The Waiting for God Letterbox is 10 miles east of the junction of Hwy. 101 and Hwy. 175 in Hopland on Hwy. 175. It is very close to the boundary of Mendocino County and Lake County, but on the Lake County side. When you reach the top of the grade look to your right for a two tiered sign with a bent arrow on the top indicating a sharp turn and with another 20 mph sign under it. Park in the next turn-off to your right just before the 0.35 Lake County road marker sign. Walk directly across the road at the 0.35 sign. Then proceed approximately 60-65 steps following next to the road as though you were still on your way to Lakeport. Stop and look to your left. In the distance you should see Clear Lake, a little closer you will note a small “ranch” where the Hari Krishnas used to live and closer yet a big rock about 20 feet from the white line. Walk behind the rock and look under its NW corner. Next to the rock and slightly under it covered with rocks will be the Waiting for God Letterbox.

Please recover carefully when you are done stamping in and make sure the letterbox is in a safe position not to roll down the hill.

Thanks for coming!!!
