In the mid 1800s a group of Germans left their homes in Brandenburg, Germany to settle in the small midwest town of Kewanee, Illinois. Like many of their counterparts, the port they left was in Bremen, Germany. When they arrived here they formed St. Michaels Church and it became known as the "Brandenburg Church". In essence they came "home" to start their new lives.

This letterbox commemorates their trip.

From Route 78 north of Kewanee, turn onto 900 N. There are signs here pointing you to Francis Park (I highly recommend a visit to this historic home) and to the Church of Peace (the church where the families of these first settlers now call home). Go 2 miles from the turn off, past the church of peace, through the stop sign (please stop first :-) ). On your left will be St Michaels Cemetery and former site of St Michaels Church.

Go the fence in the NE corner at the back of the cemetery. There are 2 braces coming from the corner post. Where the left brace meets the ground you will find the box that shows the important port of Bremen. Please hide well, it gets windy here!
