History: In honoring Oscar G. Johnson, the Department of Military and Veteran Affairs sited his bravery from September 16-17, 1944 when, as a Private First Class, he nearly single-handedly protected his company's position against a German offensive while stationed in Italy and eventually 25 German soldiers surrendered to him. "In spite of mortar fire that crashed about him and machinegun bullets which whipped the crest of his shallow trench, Sgt. Johnson stood erect and repulsed the attack with grenades and small arms fire. He remained awake and on the alert throughout the night, frustrating all attempts at infiltration." For more about Johnson's heroics, check www.michigan.gov/dmva under Military Personalities.

CLUES:
From Iron Mountain take M95 North to the Oscar G. Johnson Memorial Highway, which is M69 East towards Felch. Continue on to Foster City. On the right is the Sturgeon River. Take a dip in the river at the park or fish if you want. You may even see a bald eagle in this area. Continue a short distance east on M69. Up the hill on the left is a place of worship. Between two houses of God is the Oscar G. Johnson Memorial. Make a left at the Mission Covenant Church sign. Park in the parking area by the memorial.

Unlike Dorothy you are not in Oz, this is not a yellow brick road. Follow the red brick path to the memorial and pay your respects to Oscar. Carefully, read the historical inscription to solve your clues.

1.) Facing the memorial walk toward the memorial to center, turn in the direction opposite of the assault unit of Company B. 2.) Step off the number of men in the squad, you will find a white cornerstone. 3.) The number of days the battle raged is the number of steps you will take to find the boulder with an edge of purple hues. Behind the purple-hued rock is an arrow head boulder. The arrowhead points toward your prize. Add the total number of men and the number of days (you figured these out before), and take that many steps to the red pine between two spruce trees. Behind the base of the red pine are two small spruce---you will find your eternal flame here. Please be discreet and rehide the letterbox when you are finished stamping. Thanks.
