Nat! Nat! Happy Halloween Boxes

NOTE:

These boxes will be available from October 18, 2007 – November 26, 2007

Driving Directions:

From Route 66 East or West, take Route 147 South, Baileyville Road, to the end. As the road splits (the road becomes one way at this point) stay to the left and take a left onto Route 147/157. You’ll see a small covered bridge on your right. At the stop sign take a right onto Strickland Road. Turn right into Peckham Park and park near the maintenance building.

Clues:

Make your way to the covered bridge which you passed before, and find a small trail to the right of the bridge as you face it. Enter the trail and follow it to the struggling remains of a nooning willow. It has lost massive limbs and appears rotted, but still manages to survive. Find the downed limb that points in the direction of the bridge. Your first Halloween surprise awaits you there.

Retrace your steps back to the bridge and continue on the walking path in a counterclockwise direction. As you round the bend, passing a baseball field on your left, you will pass a bench on the right. Soon you will see a sign announcing the Trolley Trail on your right. Enter the trail going up a small incline and turn left. You will also pass rusty cages on your left, the remnants of an old mink farm. This trail is the backbone of a trolley track that never was to be. The need for trolleys waned quickly and the track was never finished.

Continue straight down the trail until you reach the Medusa Tree in the center of the trail. A benign brook, which can be a raging torrent, is just past the tree. Once at the tree turn around and at a reading of 340* look for a multi-trunked tree with snaking arms reaching upward. The Witch on the Full Moon waits at its base.

I hope you enjoyed your journey. This boggy area is a great birding spot in the spring when both sides of the trail are filled with water. If you listen closely, you can hear the water seeping into the ground below.

Special thanks to the Middlefield Lions Club for keeping the trail open.
