Anza-Borrego Letterbox #1
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California

Between Ranchita and Borrego Springs, California is a sign welcoming visitors to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. About three miles east of of the sign is Culp Valley Camp. Across the highway from the camp and down the hill a little is the Old Culp Valley Road (OCVR). A quarter mile up OCVR, on the left, is the first of many rounded, truck-sized boulders. Tucked in under the overhang of the backside of this first big boulder, beneath a small, unnatural-looking pile of rocks, is the first letterbox in the Park.

The junction of S22 and OCVR is very steep. If you park on OCVR you will have to climb back onto the highway when you leave. Oncoming traffic from both directions will be practically invisible to you. Opinions differ about whether, for this reason, it's safe to park on Old Culp Valley Road. Please use your best judgment.
