After the fall of Mobutu Sese Seko in the 1990s, the new management eliminated symbols associated with the former dictator. Unfortunately, two of those symbols were the name of Zaire and that country’s flag. In some corners of the world, the flag does yet wave.

Take the Valley Rim Trail east of Pulpit Rock toward the Pinnacle, passing a cell phone tower on your left. (Reception is only so-so.) Before too long, you will see an orange-blazed tree to your left. Twenty paces from this point is a Y-tree of sorts that seems to be pointing to the left. Follow this line to a triple tree. (There are easier ways to get to the tree once you identify it.) Behind the tree is a dead tree. Behind the dead tree is fallen deadwood.

You’ll need green, yellow, orange, and brown ink. Please reseal and rehide carefully.

Wear blaze orange. If you go during hunting season, go on Sunday.
