The Road Ogres Present: The Rogue Odor #1

***Update*** As of March 16, 2010, the box is still in its proper place. However, the area of the park that it is in is underdeveloped, and the landscape has changed quite a bit since I originally planted the box. Some of the landmarks and trails have faded or disappeared altogether. Until I rewrite the directions, you can try these current ones, or you can find the easy clues at Atlas Quest.

The letterbox can be found in Greeley Park in Nashua, NH. The park is off of Concord St, just north of historic downtown Nashua. Turn off onto the road that goes behind the open air stage and to the end. There may be some sporting events going on, so parking can be difficult.

Down at the end of this road is where your journey begins. Be sure to stop and cheer on some of the kids playing soccer or softball. Then make your way to the path at the end of the road.

There are actually two paths, one of which is blocked by two large stones. You can take either path, but let's go to the left. Shortly after, there will be a junction with a dirt bike road. Don't get run over! Take a right here. You will go over a ridge that leads down to a wide path that runs parallel to a set of railroad tracks. Turn left and walk for a while.

There will be yellow gas pipeline poles periodically along the side of the path. Just before you reach the second pole, there will be a small path on your right. Take this path and be careful as you cross the tracks. Directly in front of you will be a small but visible path in the brush. Take this path and you will come to a dirt road. Turn right and walk 30 steps. On your left will be a path leading into the woods. Go down here past the remnants of a lean-to. Go straight through an intersection. The path with lead you over fallen logs, through a sea of ferns and past a tree with a "cancerous growth".

Eventually you will reach another dirt road. Cross here and look for a large ditch toward your right with a boat launch on the far end. In front of you will be a high ridge with a path running along the top and the Merrimack River on the other side. Look for the fairly-large Y-shaped tree that is leaning over the water. With the tree on your right, take 60 steps along the path. You will come to a moss-covered oak tree on the left edge of the path. There is a fallen tree at the bottom of the hill that is pointing to the oak tree. *sniff, sniff* What's that horrible smell? It seems to be coming from the base of the tree. Hurry up and stamp in before it causes anymore stinkiness!

Watch your step and re-hide the box carefully. This part of Greeley Park is dog-friendly, as long as you keep them on a leash. Enjoy!

Updated 06/30/08. Some of the features had changed since I first planted the box, so I had to clarify some of the directions. The box is still there and raising quite a stink!
