"Possible Dolmen in New York State. A 16 x 14 x 10 foot pink granite boulder balance on four or five similarly colored, shaped and placed limestone supports. Until I saw it close up, I assumed it was a glacial erratic.
Having seen it and having seen numerous other pedestaled or propped stones in prominent places on the eastern mountains, I now incline toward the theory that it is man-made, but passionate arguments are made on both sides. Before making a judgement, it would be wise to examine the boulder and its supports for yourself. " This is one of the conversations surrounding the Balancing Rock.
To see for yourself drive to North Salem following along Rte. 121 heading North. Just past the intersection of Rte.116 keep a look out on your right for our boulder. It is just before an art gallery also located on your right.
Once there, you can read a description on a sign. Turn to face the road. On the left side by the road there is a stump. Directly above the stump covered in rocks, you will find the box!!
