Levi Wines was an 1874 UM alum, an Ann Arbor High school teacher and a member of the Ann Arbor Parks Commission. In a letter he wrote to the city council, he said “My idea of a park is a place where all the people, old and young, can go for all sorts of legitimate recreations and sports. Not a place where there are beautiful drives and well kept lawns and flower beds only, but a place our boys and girls can go and play.” I think that he would be pleased that the elementary school named after him is located very near to one of the great parks in Ann Arbor, Bird Hills.

This summer, the front door of Wines Elementary School was left open, and the school mascot decided to go for a little stroll to check out the park her namesake would have enjoyed. Follow these clues to find her!

Park by the entrance to Bird Hills closest to Wines. Enter the park through the opening in the fence at the South end of the parking lot.

Go down a log staircase- count the steps as you go and make a note.
When the trail comes to a “T”, go North.
A lace covered log has fallen over the trail- there’s a cutout on the Right. When a small trail joins your path, don’t backtrack, keep going forward.

There’s a great letterbox stump in the middle of the trail- but it’s a bit too exposed. Head away from the houses at this point.
As you are walking you will see a shelter to the left. Take a detour and check it out. Go back to the main trail and head left.
Go down another log staircase to a trail intersection. Head East.

As you crest the hill and just before you descend, there are two 2-trunked trees on either side of the trail (did you check, are you about to descend? If not, keep going). From the tree on the Right take a heading of 170o and take the same number of single step paces as the number you noted earlier. Find the mascot in a fallen log, covered in bark. Hide her well when you are done.

After finding and hiding the letterbox, continue on down the hill to a log bench and check out the natural “BLOG”. Then check out the other two examples of shelters built in the Hills. Explore the park further, or return the way you came in.

This was our first letterbox placement. Please let us know if you had any trouble finding it!

NOTE: we received a message that our box had been found in the middle of the trail and have recovered it (thanks!!) but stamp was missing. I have carved a new one and will replant soon (and post when I do). Sorry about any trouble.
