Welcome to the James T Slavin Conservation area. This property formerly was the site of the Diamond S Ranch, a 628 working farm near Rosa Butte on the West Plains. The property was acquired by Spokane County Parks, Recreation & Golf in 1998 and is now being restored to the original wetlands. In November, the County razed the farmhouse, barn and outbuildings, which is kinda too bad, they were fun to poke around in. This letterbox takes you through a large, very beautiful meadow, past a stand of Aspens, then through a sparse dry uplands fir and pine forest. If nothing else, just seeing how water makes a difference, makes this trip worthwhile.

Getting Close
From I90, take US South/Colfax/Pullman exit, #279.
Drive south on 195 for approximately 8.4 miles
Turn right (west) on Washington Road, drive to the T intersection
Turn right (north) on Keeney Rd, parking is on the left

To the Box
From the gravel parking lot head west on the trail through the grassy meadow. Continue up over the rise keeping a lookout for a footpath on the left that heads south. At the edge of the meadow you can see the Aspens. Take this left, walk past the Aspens, and through the Pine trees until the path you're on turns into a 2 rut road. Should you miss this turn, you'll find yourself sloughing through grasses towering over your head. A small cairn marks the next intersection, stay to the right.

Soon you'll see a broken Poplar and 4 thirsty apple trees. This is where the farmhouse once stood. The prize is resting in the orchard, log in please!
