These boxes were originally planted by the Gal Pals in 2001 and adopted by DevilinDog in 2012. The original clues were located at this site http://eyejustdesign.com/thither.org/galpals/herosjourney.html Some modifications have been made, most recently in Sept. 2020, so please use the updated clues below. Disregard old comments since they may not reflect the current box locations or trails.
Directions: From Durham's 'Town Green', take RT 17 south. Turn left onto RT 77. After approximately 1 mile turn left onto Diongi Rd. (If you come to Mica Hill Rd., you have gone too far.) At the end of Diongi, take a right onto Cream Pot Road and go to the end of the road. There is a dirt parking area at the very end.
On foot from the parking lot, go through the gate onto the woods road blazed yellow. Follow until the Blue Trail to the right. Stay on the Blue Trail to Pyramid Rock. Begin your Quest here. Please note that the Red Trail begins behind Pyramid Rock. Not all boxes have log books. For a map of the Mica Ledge Trails go to : http://www.madisonlandtrust.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/MLCT_MicaLedges.pdf
The Quest-
From Pyramid Rock follow the RED TRAIL in a southerly direction. Go a short way- about .02 miles. "Behind the large rock on which two birches grow, it is there where you should go." (This boulder is right next to the trail, and one birch is now a 10 foot tall snag) Here you will find The Knight on the northwestern side, go around and up the back of the rock to get it.
Continue on the RED TRAIL heading south. At the "T", bear right and be loyal to Crimson. The trail climbs upward. When you come to where an Unmarked Trail joins the Red Trail, (specifically, at a double blazed tree indicating a left turn in the trail, you’ll see a boulder in front of you and the faint markings of an old trail, now pretty overgrown but the boulder is your goal) while standing on the red trail, it (the red trail) bears off at 215 degrees and the unmarked trail forks due west at 270 degrees) GO ONLY 12 steps up the Unmarked Trail and there you will claim The Sword from the crevice in the boulder on your left.
Return to the Journey up the RED TRAIL and continue on it as it heads through Mountain Laurel. Be watchful for Mystical Creatures, as this is their Realm. As the trail winds due north, look for the remnants of a tree that the woodpeckers loved, little more than a stump now, just at a double blazed tree indicating a right turn. From this tree, head northwest ( 320 degrees) over the boulder floor for 12 "hoof beats". Now step down and go 6 steps around to your sinister (left) side and it is there that you will find a Mystical Creature hidden under a granite flake. Stamp in and then continue the Quest on the RED TRAIL .
Soon you will come to a beautiful Vista (not really vista like in full leaf season). Stop and rest awhile for water and a snack. When you are ready, continue on the Red Trail. Soon you will glimpse the back end of the Dragon’s Lair, a hill size boulder on your left. You will also see the water below you on your left. (Do you hear the footsteps of another Beast ahead?) The RED TRAIL will soon make a sharp right turn but stop there at the double blazed tree and turn left to spot an unmarked trail. Be brave-hearted but do not be foolish! Step very cautiously down a four foot drop and just before the next drop look to your right to see a Dragon’s perch – just a boulder with an overhang, but from here the Dragon can watch his lair on the left, and the water down below. You will find A Dragon tucked in on the corner under that single boulder. Be sure to hide it well again and weight it so it does not wash downhill.
Return to the RED TRAIL and continue on. At the junction with Yellow and the Maria Schmidt Memorial Trail, turn right on yellow.
You will cross a small streambed. Go 25 steps to the Magician's Stone on your right. Look on the left (west) side of the stone and find The Magician.
Continue the Quest and the trail meets up with the BLUE TRAIL. (Note, to go left would lead you to the Selectman's Stones and just after that an Add On to Oma's Outlook) Go right on the BLUE TRAIL HEADING NORTH along the ledges.
Continue on the Blue Trail passing smaller vistas on your left side. (Look for two more boxes from Oma's Outlook). Stay on the Blue Trail. Pass more outlooks as you continue along the ledges. Continue up and down on the Blue Trail until you reach a very steep descent. Go slowly (hold hands if necessary). Go on down to the bottom and at level ground, on your right will be a H-U-G-E ROCK ... hmmmm, looks a bit familiar. Turn to face the rock. At its northern most end, you will find The Hero. BE VERY CAREFUL STAMPING IN as this is a well traveled area by both hikers and bikers. Rehide with great care!
WELL DONE! BRAVE HEROES! You have finished this part of the journey. If any of you modern heros value the use of gps coordinates, I have those available so feel free to ask.

The Quest continues for those who wish to seek the Last Letterbox- #7. ! (This Bonus has been reported as missing, but I will leave the clues in case some brave souls want to try it again) It is not at the Mica Ledges! The Last Letterbox can be found by putting the clues together and thinking hard about what Relic was sought by some great heroes of long ago and by knowing where (what town) that Relic was "supposedly taken"by Joseph of Arimathea. The Druid name for this place was "Ynys Witrin".
Now follow these clues once you find the name of the town:
One park in town holds the key to where the ancient relic just might be
Follow the Main on a path serene
Past sentries tall clothed in green
As stairs descend down the trail
Over planks of wood- do not fail
Right up rooted path of red
The treasure lies not far ahead
To your left, stonewall fades from sight
Up the hill and around to right
Eighteen steps to a tree so tall
At its base the Prize will fall....
You may choose to retrace your steps when done or follow the Red until it meets up with the Main Trail. Take a left onto the Main and follow till you find your way out of the forest.
