This letterbox was created and planted by the first grade students at the Holden School.

The Maine School Zone letterbox is located behind the Holden School on the Holden Nature Trails. Holden is a growing community just outside of Brewer. Take Rt1A toward Ellsworth/Bar Harbor and you will go right past the Holden School. It is on the left, next to the RED BARN CAMPGROUND.

NOTICE: There is work going on to update the map and mark the trails. Right now there are no maps available. I have updated these directions to help you find this box without the map.

Behind the school is a parking lot near the beginning of the nature trail. You may park here to begin your walk.Go down "Deer Trail", just to the right of the kiosk. Follow Deer Trail until it crosses with another trail. Deer Trail goes to the left and up a small hill. You will take the trail to the right. It may or may not be marked at this time, but it is the lower end of "Maine Trail". Watch for an arrow pointing to the LEFT.(It's a ways down the trail.) Here you will take this trail to the left. The arrow is the only marking (You are still on Maine Trail.) Soon you will begin an upward climb. As you continue upward you will come to a huge rock on the left side of the trail. Stand on the trail and look at the rock. Go around the left side of the rock and look for a pile of rocks and sticks against the side of the rock. Here is where you will find the Maine School Zone letterbox.

You may continue up the hill and take the trail either way to get back to the school. This is a wonderful hike for families, but it is too rough for a stroller.
There are many benches along the way so you can sit and enjoy the beauty of this wooded trail.
