One legend of how Nags Head obtained it's name is the result of a native to the Outer Banks who tied a lantern around the neck of an old nag. The horse would then be led back and forth on the sand dunes to lure ships in to run aground, as they would mistake the lantern for ships safely at anchor. When they would also attempt to go to anchor these ships would instead run aground, and then be looted by the land pirates of Nags Head.
