Morgan Falls and St.Peter's Dome are located on the western end of the Penokee Range which was formed about 1.8 billion years ago. The granite dome was formed about 1.1 billion years ago. The mountains wore away by millions of years of erosion, which included four glacial advances. The hills that form the Penokee Range are the hard, resistant remains of those ancient mountains.
LB#1
From Ashland, drive south on hwy 13 for about 13 miles. Turn west on hwy C. Follow it 4.8 miles to Wildcat Road. After 1.2 miles,on Wildcat Road, turn south on the Ashland-Bayfield Road (FR199)3.9 miles to the parking lot on the east side of the road. Morgan Falls is a 1.2 mile round trip hike from the parking lot. From the SE corner of the lot follow the trail east. You will come upon an old campground built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's. The old stone fireplaces, an artesian well and a round cistern are all that remain. Follow the path to the right and you will enter a high-walled canyon. You will hear and then see the 70'Morgan Falls cascading down the canyon walls in a series of steps. While standing at it's base, turn SE to the tree stump that looks to be pointing to the sky.Cross the stream and standing with your back to the stump, look to the outcropping at 90 degrees from magnetic north. On the "back" side, look for the rock that does't appear to belong. It is under it that you will find LB#1. Please reseal and hide well.

The hike to St.Peter's Dome is a 3.6 mile round trip. It is a rugged, steep climb made easier by bringing along drinking water and a hiking stick.(people often leave hiking sticks in the parking lot for others to use, please don't defrock the forest:) At the CCC campground, continue east up the trail. There is a lake-sized beaver pond to your left. Watch for uneven ground with rocks and tree roots on the trail. At the base of the granite outcrop that is the dome, you will see a jumble of large broken rocks, the remains of a quarry which was abandoned in 1970. The north face of the dome looks out over the forest, and on a clear day you can see Chequamegon Bay and the Apostle Islands. BE VERY CAREFUL,AS THE EDGE HAS A SHEAR DROP! You have climbed 1,565', and if you're as out of shape as me felt every foot of it! After catching your breath and taking in the view, turn back to the trail. When you reach the first square timber crossing the trail continue on 6 paces further. Turn west and on your left there will be an outcropping of rocks. Follow along the edge to it's end and look down into the crevice at it's base...There you will find LB#2. Reseal and hide well. Return to your car on the same trail you came up on, being observant of staying on the trail and not stumbling over any of those nasty rocks and roots! ***Please let me know if the boxes are missing or in need of repair, it's a bit out of the way!
