This letterbox was placed in honor of the second annual Thompsons' Waldo Lake Campout and Kayak Gathering. Great place for kids, dogs okay on leash, restrooms and water available. Bring a picnic and play for the day!

Next to Crater Lake, Waldo Lake reigns as Oregon's deepest at 420 feet. In addition, Waldo Lake is one of the purest bodies of water in the world. An 8 inch white disk lowered into the lake was still visible at 157 feet. A speed of 10 mph limits the numbe of power boats on the lake. More often visible are sailboats, canoes and kayaks, on the nearly 10 square miles of water. Twenty one miles of coastline provide hiking opportunities to a variety of viewpoints, and in the fall the huckleberries are abundant. All in all, it's a great place to spend a day or two! Access is limited to the spring through fall due to snowfall.

From Interstate 5 south of Eugene, take the Highway 58 (#188) exit and go toward Oakridge. Watch your odometer and at 60 miles begin to look for the Waldo Lake Road turnoff on your left. (If you're coming from Hwy. 97 take the Hwy. 58 exit toward Oakridge and watch for the turnoff for Waldo Lake on your right)

There are three campgrounds on the shores of Waldo Lake - Shadow Bay, Islet and North Waldo. All have boat docks and the Shoreline Trail links them to one another.

Shadow Bay will be your starting point. Drive to the intersection giving you the option to launch your boat or pitch your tent. Look to your right at the Pay Station. The road loops through as the numbers get larger. Find #39 and the unmarked trail posts adjoining. Follow the trail to a Y in the Shoreline Trail. Head south through the white gateway and climb across the hopover log. Thirteen paces further, stand with your back to the Pirate Cove. Surrounded by bearded elders and the remnants of an ancient giant you will find a stump of rebirth. Look at its base away from the trail to find Waldo under bark and needles - be careful, the trail is often busy.

Please take a minute to let me know the box is secure and safe. Thanks! And happy hunting!
