The Potato Butte trail is a short sidetrail near Sheep Lake on the Red Lake Trail. See my Red Lake Trail clues for a bit of information on how to find the trailhead.

Potato Butte can easily be seen around the area, and once you summit it, you may have outstanding views Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Hood, Olallie Butte, Si Si Butte and lookout station, multiple nearby lakes, and the landmark powerlines that span the region. Potato Butte is famous for its' potatoes, unique geologic rock formations created during the volcanic activity that resulted in the butte. The soil is brick red up there. The small loose rocks underfoot are red and orange pumice, and consequently the trail can be a bit slippery. Hiking poles are quite handy in giving you additional sturdiness up and down this short hike. Be sure to take the sidetrail near the summit for an incredible view of Mt. Jefferson, and to better examine the potatoes.

Once you Summit the butte, walk north toward Mt. Hood, passing between a hemlock and its' noble friend. Turn to face Olallie Butte. Down in front of you is a rotting log. Follow it to the end, and look under red rock. Small-tipped markers are best for this stamp.
