Eastern State Penitentary
Philadelphia, PA
Background: This box was hidden July 16, 2001, during the Bastille Day celebrations at the Penitentary. They have fine French cuisine and costume contests. The highlight of the day is a visit by Marie Antoinette, who does her "Let them eat cake" speech, but with a US twist. It is changed to Tastykake, and they throw Butterscotch Krimpets at the peasants (hey, anything for free Krimpets!). Unfortunately, we peasants are not happy with that and she is beheaded.
Also as equally spectacular are the haunted prison tours held in October, which are not suitable for children. I recommend tying in your visit to one of these times, although tours are given year round (you can see the cell that housed Al Capone).
Clue: Virtually no walking involved.
After exiting the penitentary, turn eastward and begin your walk around the outside of the fortification. Halfway down the eastern face, outside of the fences, you will notice a Friends of East State Pen. sign. The box is hidden behind the fencepost in the middle of the sign. Please be VERY discreet, as the area can get very busy.
