VERY SAD NEWS...as of mid June, we discovered the box to be missing. The sight looked pretty worked over, so we're not sure what happened, but we will be replacing it in a new location soon.

If you love the north woods, especially during the fall, this letterbox is for you. You get to it by driving on a scenic road through hardwood forest, crossing little creeks, and winding to and fro. Our family has a cabin in the area, and we couldn't resist placing a box near our own weekend retreat.

You need to get to National Forest road 166. You can get there off Highway 7, just south of Crooked Lake, or out of Tofte, but I'm not sure the name of that road. Check a detailed map. When you come to 166, you'll turn right toward Heartbreak Hill. If you turn on 166 from 7, you'll travel seven miles. You'll end up in a maple tree forest at the top of a hill where there will be a sign telling you how it got its name.

Not far from the sign is an ATV trail heading south. Take 80 adult steps down that trail. Look to the right. About ten yards in you'll see a birch tree so old that only the leaves give it away. It has a gaping sideways smile some four feet long in its side. Find the deepest V at its base and behind crumpled leaves in the crook of that V lies the box.
