IXOYE

The earliest followers of Jesus were persecuted and forced to worship in hidden locations. Often these believers would scratch the secret symbol of a fish in the ground to help them identify other Christians. Not only was fish a common food of the day, often used and referenced by Jesus during His ministry, but the letters which make up the Greek word for "fish" (IXOYE ) also spell out a secret message about the Lord: I-Jesus, X-Christ, O -God’s, Y -Son, E -Savior. Throughout generations the fish symbol continues to identify true followers of Jesus Christ.

The IXOYE letterbox is located in the Joe Pool Lake Visitor Overlook. From I-20, go south on 1382 for 2 miles. The entrance to the Visitor Overlook is to the right and is not well marked, however, before going through the gate you will see the Visitor Overlook sign to the right. Take the second left and follow the circle to the parking area.

Between two benches you will see a trail heading down into a wooded area. Take this trail until you come to a crossing. Continue straight through the crossing, then take the left fork. From the beginning of the fork take approxmately 50 steps then stop and enjoy a view of Joe Pool Lake. Look to your right and find a cedar tree that forks both north and south. Under the north trunk you will find this special letterbox under a piece of bark.

As with all letter boxes, please seal the bags and hide it carefully. After you are finished, walk down to the edge of the lake and enjoy!
