To get to the Star Lake Nature Trail:

From the intersection of Co Hwys N & K at Star Lake, continue west on Hwy K. For Star Lake Nature Trail, from the intersection of Co Hwy N & K at Star Lake, continue west on Hwy K to Statehouse Rd and turn south. (Just past the Star Lake Store) When you get to the entrance to the West Star Campground, continue straight ahead.

To find the Letterbox:

At the green pump near the parking lot, stop and listen for the merlin that sometimes greets hikers. Head into the trail.

At the sign, "Star Lake: A Glimpse into the Past" take the trail to the right. Walk through the tall pines and around a couple of bends. Soon, to your right, you will see beautiful Star Lake through the trees. Follow the trail deeper into the woods. After passing the interpretive sign "Early Forest Rangers: Protecting the Resource" you will reach a fork in the trail. You may choose either direction. (The longer trail will take you along the lake's edge.) They will both take you to a second pump.

At the clearing by the lake, enjoy a rest on the bench with a lovely view of Star Lake. Have a metalic sip of water from the pump and continue on the Nature Trail with the sign indicating 1/2 mile to go.

When you reach a boardwalk labelled "Black Lagoon Dead End 100 Feet" turn right into a verdant bog habitat. (At least it's verdant in the summer!) Notice spagnum moss on either side of the board walk. Other "creatures" you might find are Labrador tea, carnivorous plants (e.g. pitcher plant) and tamarack trees. Follow the boardwalk to the end and snap a picture of the beautiful Black Lagoon.

Head back to the trail and continue to your right. At the next boardwalk, count out enough slats to spell "Black Lagoon" and look under the support beam on the left side. The box is balanced on the support beam and covered with a piece of bark to camouflage it from above.

Congratulations! You have found the Knot of Toads' first attempt at placing a letter box.

Enjoy the rest of your hike back to the parking lot.
