Machine From First Factory in Athens
Established 1882 by local planter H. M. Morrison, to make building brick. Total orginal machinery consisted of the press and plunger. Press was hand operated. A mule drawn swivel ran the plunger. Mixing clay dug at the plant site.
C. H. Coleman bought into firm in 1891; after Morrison's death in 1899 he became sole owner.
Harbison-Walker refractories Company bought buisness in 1940; continued making Coleman bricks and enriching economy until closing in 1968. These machines are a permanent loan to the city of Athens, from Harbison-Walker.
To the letterbox:
From downtown Athens, travel Hwy 19 South towards Palestine approximately 1 mile. You will see J. Pickney Henderson Park on your left. The park is an island between Hwy 19 South and St. Thomas Street, and is very small. It is located across Hwy 19 from Texas Trust Bank. When you find the area, park on St.Thomas Street close to the Historical Markers. Read the various historical markers including the one about the first factory in Athens. You will then see the two brick making machines near the markers. Find the brick plunger machine. Stand facing the front of the plunger. If you look to the left side of the machine, there is horizontal slot just big enough for a letterbox.
Check out the clues to my Caddoan Pottery letterbox which is also hidden in this park.
