Hike is approx. a half mile on part of the Appalachian Trail to the letterbox. Plan on about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes from start ot finish. Bring a snack or picnic lunch to enjoy at the waterfall. It is a favorite family picnic spot of ours.

Terrain is rocky- you will be crossing over either a dry stream bed or if the stream is full, you will have to cross it a few times on rocks that are sticking out of the water. MY kids love this part!!

Fun Facts: The Appalachian trail is 2,175 miles long, stretching through 14 eastern states from Maine to Georgia. It takes 5,000,000 adult footsteps to hike the entire trail. There are approximately 260 trail shelters along the way. Shelters and campsites are spaced about a days hike apart. Volunteers monitor and maintain the trail and its shelters and there are 30 volunteer trail maintaining clubs associated with the Appalachian trail. The trail is marked with two inch by six inch verticle white paint blazes. A double blaze is placed before turns, junctions or other areas that require hikers to be alert. There are approxiamalty 165,000 blazes along the trail. About 3 to 4 million visitors hike a section of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail each year.

Clues: From Route 17M in Monroe take Lakes Road towards Greenwood Lake. You will pass a large lake on your left hand side and then there will be a yellow blinking light. Continue straight through the light and go 2.1 miles from the light to the Appalachian Trail sign (a small sign-green with white hikers). You have to keep yours eyes out for it, it is a small sign. There will also be a "welcome to Warwick" sign right at the trail marker. Park your car on the side of the road.
You will enter the trail on the left hand side of the road.

Follow the white trail blazes down the path. You will come to a narrow wooden foot bridge- continue over that and follow the white blazes. It will lead you back and forth over a stream bed, which may or may not be full of water. At one point you will see a tree with 4 white blazes on it (which means the trail will turn and junction with another trail) You want to stay to the left trail and continue following the white trail blazes. This will lead you to a beautiful waterfall- stop and enjoy the view. Now follow the trail up to the top of the waterfall, where there are a few pools of water and frogs to be found! It looks a bit steep but my daughter has been making the climb since she was 5!
At the top of the falls, look for a skinny tree that has a lot of carvings on it. Stand and look at the tree so that the water is behind it, then do an about face and turn around to look in the opposite direction. The treasure is hidden in the roots of a tree stump. Remove some rocks to reveal the box. Please return all the rocks to carefully hide the tresure when you are done.
Hope you enjoyed your hike!
