This letterbox is in Arthur W. Butler Memorial Preserve. To get there, take I-684 to Exit 4. Go west on Rte. 172 for .3 miles to the first left, Chestnut Ridge Road. Follow the road for 1.2 miles, turning right over the bridge – this leads to the parking lot.

**You may want to bring binoculars and breakfast/lunch with you for this search.

From the parking lot, follow the Hawkwatch sign to the left (Orange Trail). This trail will go uphill – the highway is below on the left; a cyclone fence is also to the left of the trail.

After the path cuts over a stone wall, walk ahead to the Hawkwatch. Perched at 770 feet above sea level, the Robert J. Hammershlag Hawkwatch provides views to Long Island Sound and the Taconic Mountains. Here’s where the binoculars come in handy – use them to enjoy the view, and look for hawks, eagles or other birds. This is also a nice place to enjoy your meal.

After you’ve enjoyed the view, leave the Hawkwatch on the same side you entered it, and follow the Yellow Trail. At the fork, go right. The trail will soon go through a stone wall. Right after the wall, make a left turn after you pass the first tree on the left (marked with a yellow blaze). Then walk 13 steps parallel to the wall. You should see a dead tree covered with fungus – the letterbox is in the wall about 2 ½ feet to the left of the tree, about 2/3 of the way up from the bottom.

After finding the box, you can follow the yellow trail to the red trail; make a right when the red trail forks and it will take you back to the parking lot. Otherwise, you can look for the “Sneaky Sunset Rock” letterbox nearby.
