Esopus Bend Nature Preserve
www.esopuscreekconservancy.org
Directions:
From the village of Saugerties, after crossing the Esopus Creek bridge traveling South on Route 9W, make a right onto Overbaugh Street, make a left onto Simmons Drive, a right onto Appletree Drive and a left onto Shady Lane.
There is a small parking lot that can accommodate a few cars.
Clues:
After looking at the kiosk which shows you a map of the preserve, head down the Schroeder Trail (blue markers)to the left. It is a 1.2 mile hike. There is a big drop off on the left side of the trail. At the signpost, go right, continuing on the blue trail.
This trail will take you right along the creek, across a wooden bridge, and to a "T" in the trail. Continue to the left (blue markers).
You will pass a small clearing on the right and soon come to a fork in the trail. The blue trail goes to the right, but you want to go to the left toward the water. (There is a white rectangular "blaze" on a thin tree in the fork)
Go to the water's edge and follow the little trail to the left for a few feet. Notice the vine swing hanging between two trees. Look straight ahead. You'll see a big rotting stump.
The letterbox is hiding in this stump in a camoflauged bag. It is covered with tree bark. (Contains a box with a stamp, logbook, ink pad, and pen)
Please reseal all bags and recover with tree bark and/or branches so that the letterbox stays safe and hidden.
Please email and let us know how the box is doing.
To return to your car:
When you return to the blue trail, you can go back to the right along the creek, or venture out to the left for a more wooded hike (steep at times) with another great view of the water.
