Very short walk through field and woods. All flat. 30 Minute round trip.

John Brown was a 19th century abolitionist who became well-known for his controversial raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia. He and his sons were captured and then tried and hung. They are buried in the family homestead in Lake Placid, New York. When you visit the sight you can take a tour of John Brown’s house and visit the gravesite. There are interesting and informational plaques around the grave that will give you a better understanding of this controversial character from United States history. The sight is situated on beautiful fields with wooded trails surrounding it. There are great views of mountains and the Olympic ski jumps. This is a popular spot for people to stroll, jog, cross country ski or play with their dogs in the fields.

CLUES

Park in the first grass parking lot on your left.

Admire the ski jumps in front of you and then look north towards Whiteface Mountain. Begin walking on the trail heading towards Whiteface. HINT: Look beyond the trees for Whiteface Mountain.

Now the ski jumps should be on your right side. Walk along the trail past the wall of pines.

When the trail forks veer left and you should see a grove of Birch trees.

Continue into the woods and you should walk under a tunnel of pines. When the trail comes to a “T” make a right. Keep walking the path and soon the ski jumps should be right above you on your left.

Keep going until you see a large pitch forked Birch tree. From the tree walk 10 paces. You should now be standing next to two pillars of birch.

Find the small trail that leads to a clearing and enter the clearing. Walk five steps to the first pine tree and then there should be two more small pines in front of you. Walk up the hill to the third one.

Turn right and walk 6 paces into the cove of pines. Peer through the pine trees and try to see the trail that you just came off of. Your prize is hanging from a branch in one of the pines.
