Birds of a Feather

We birds love to fly around Ridley Creek State Park, and you can join us. Start by going to the Park Office. If you go into the entry lobby, you can pick up a brochure listing the different birds in the area, so that you can pick what type of bird you want to be for this adventure.

All birds love to be clean, so start by leaving the park office and flying up the hill ahead on the left. Inside of a grove of trees you will find an enormous birdbath, complete with splashing fountains. After you take a quick bird bath and check around the flowers for tasty insects, fly toward the wall containing a stone that is the Pennsylvania state nickname.

Hop up the stone stairs behind the wall. At the top, look for the fallen log and glide down the path in that direction. Where the path ends, bank to the south. Drift under the great Red Oak that hangs over the path, and continue until you come to an area of many choices. You just spotted a hawk, so zip along the path that leads further into the woods.

Zooming along this paved path, go down the hill to the left. You pass steps on the left, but they lead to nowhere, so continue along.

You approach the “kettle drums.” Stop for a minute if you want to bounce on them, otherwise continue up the path.

Perch for a moment on the bench alongside the path. From this vantage point, your eagle eye may spot two narrow paths down the hill that lead back into the woods. You now must choose which path to follow. The main path is to the left, and will lead you over a wood bridge. But adventuresome eagles can choose the path on the right and try to cross the creek as the animals do.

From the end of the bridge, flit along the trail that goes straight ahead if your tailfeathers are pointing to the bridge.

Now follow the trail marked with blazes of the favorite color of the yellow-bellied sap-sucker. Glide along the meandering path, following the blazes. The wobbly log will serve as a landmark.

Before you get to the road traveled by humans on foot and on bike, fly to the left, again following the trail of the yellow-bellied sap-sucker.

Dart past a log of alligator skin and fly up a small hill to a look out point. Swoop back down the hill along some steps of wood.

This path has taken back to the human road, but this time you must rush across – take care not to get hit by those strange devices with wheels. Head to the funny-looking birdhouse alongside the road. You look inside, but instead of a comfortable nest, all you see are white pieces of paper with writing on them, so you move on.

There is another trail for you to follow behind the mailbox, this time marked with the color of the dove. Soar up the steep hill. You are feeling tired, so roost for a moment at the big fallen log blocking the path. Perching on the splintered stump, look down into the stump and you will find other birds of a feather.

To return home, go as the crow flies. Go back down the hill, cross the road, and continue across the bridge. Just past the bridge, veer left off of the paved road and onto a dirt path. This will go uphill and leads another parking lot near the Park Office. The Office is to your left from this parking lot. Either follow the paved road, or take a shortcut to your left (down the grassy hill, through an opening in the trees, then back up a hill and past the restrooms).
