Note: You will need a compass for this excursion. It will take you less than an hour, and is about 1.5 miles in total.
Go in the main entrance of Schooley's Mountain Park in Long Valley NJ.
Drive straight back as far as you can, then make a right and go as far as you can.
Park.
Get out of your fuel efficient vehicle.
Begin walking southwest.
When you reach the path, head downhill.
When you come to a tree with 3 trunks, go west.
Stay on the blacktop/gravel path...do NOT take wooden paths or stairways.
At the fork, go left (up the hill).
When you come to a building, stop and enjoy the view.
See anything you recognize?
Head south on the gravel path.
After a while, you will come to a tree with 2 trunks on the right...keep going up the hill.
Slightly further on, you will come to a big rock and a handful of smaller ones (also on the right). Sit on the big rock and rest a minute.
Proceed on, and take the Highland Cut.
Look for the split rock on the right.
About 50 feet to the Northeast of this split rock is a fallen tree leaning on a big rock.
This is it!
Once you have found the box, you can return the same way you came, or continue on up Highland Cut. This is a little bit longer, but a nice walk back to the parking lot.
Caution: if you keep going, be sure to follow the signs to the parking lot, and stay on the main path. At one point the main path veers sharply to the left. If you miss this turn, you will find yourself coming to a street. If you make this mistake, simply walk back a few hundred feet to find the main path.
Enjoy our letterbox!
