“The Greeneway” is a paved biking and hiking trail that follows the abandoned railroad. A truck from a railroad car holds the “Greeneway” sign and this section features a 90-foot flatbed railcar, donated by TTX-Hamburg Division, which serves as a bridge crossing Crystal Creek. The trail serves as a reminder of the days when the community was the terminal point of the Charleston to Hamburg, a town that preceded North Augusta between 1821 and the early 1900s.

On his trusty bicycle, Mr. LAFS “trains” on this trail several times a week. This section is 1 1/2 miles.

The Greeneway is open from dawn to dusk. Pets must be on a leash at all times.

Directions:
Parking and Greeneway access for this letterbox is located near the Greeneway's eastern terminus off of Riverside Boulevard opposite the entrance drive to the River Golf Club. From Georgia Ave. turn East onto Buena Vista Ave. Turn right on Riverside Blvd.

Clues:
Find the railroad car wheels which hold the Greeneway sign and read the map. Follow the arrows that say “Riverfront” (not Greeneway). Do not cross the road. Walking along the sidewalk, notice the abandoned railroad tracks on your left.
Continue the Round-A-Bout way. Stay on the sidewalk toward Shoreline drove. Cross the road that takes you along the highway bridge and walk to the Riverfront Greeneway in the white fenced in area. Stay on the asphalt that curves to the right and walk upriver. The next landmark is reminiscent of a tiny train depot; a small pavilion between the river and “Hammond‘s Ferry“. “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” - Yogi Berra. Around the bend you will come to a wooden bridge. Standing on this bridge you will see the flatbed railcar, which serves as the next bridge. Approach the railcar bridge and read the plaque. Go around the plaque to the right and sit on the first railroad tie that supports the bridge facing the direction you just came from. Beware, it’s oily and dirty! Look down to your right at the rusty metal rail and “X” marks the spot!
