The Wedguwe Tribe Series Box #1

“The Order Of The Kokopelli”

Once upon a time, many long years ago, in a land not so far away, there was a band of Indians that roamed the verdant lands of central Michigan. They were known as the Wedguwe Tribe. Blood descendants of this auspicious band include Sacagawea, (from Lewis & Clark fame), Teddy Roosevelt, Bob Feller, (from the Ohio branch), and Tonto. They were a peaceful fun-loving bunch. They got along with everyone. That is, until a conflict of interest arose with another group led by a little guy that you may have become acquainted with through the “Apple Orchard” letterbox.

Harsh words escalated to making faces at each other---which escalated to spit-balls---which escalated to hair pulling---which escalated to shoulder slugs---which escalated to arrow snapping---then eventually all out war---all over what the little guy claimed was his Sugar Bush. As if any respectable Indian would lay claim to owning trees. What a sap!

During the war, the Wedguwe’s were afraid that the opposing tribe would intercept their communications and discover their plans, so they called upon a German Spiritualist missionary friend of theirs for help. (The Wedguwe’s had trouble pronouncing the missionary’s given name, so they referred to him as Sooie Caesar because of the language he spoke). The thought was to have Sooie Caesar communicate with the various Wedguwe war parties in a language the little guy’s bunch couldn’t understand---he thus became “The Original Wind Talker”---long before the Navaho’s got all the credit for the idea during World War II.

For his help, the Wedguwe’s awarded Sooie Caesar their highest honor---The Order Of The Kokopelli. From that day on he really had it made with the chicks---particularly in the Union Colony---but that’s another story you’ll learn more about later.

The final battle between these two tribal titans took place at a site that is commemorated with a memorial letterbox. To get you started, you need find a place in T 4N R 4W where you will find a marker that will serve as your Rosetta Stone. Decipher and follow these directions:

NOTE: When doing box maintainence in May '08, we found that a plank was missing from one of the clue elements noted above. If the plank has been replaced you will have no problem. If it hasn't, you'll need to look closely for the nails that held the original plank. They were still there.

This box is in a highly traveled area. Please be discreet and rehide well. Thank you.
