This is a series of letterboxes about the story of F rances S locum, a girl who was kidnapped by L enni L enape Indians, and given the L enape name “M aconaquah,” which means “Little Bear.”

This series is planted along the M ocanaqua Loop Trail in northeastern PA, near S hickshinny. This is a somewhat challenging hike, with some steep sections. It’s well worth the hike, with beautiful ravines and overlooks. Click the link for directions and a trail map.

Park in the lot, and peruse the map and information center if you like. Then cross the railroad tracks on foot, and follow the “TO TRAIL” signs to…um…well, to the trail. Enjoy the view of the sewage treatment plant as you head toward the trail.

Lenape Turtle

* Look for the multi-colored blazes (orange, green, blue, brown).

* The trail heads uphill immediately, and then levels off for a while.

* When it begins to rise again slightly, look on the right for a large outcropping just off the trail, with a double tree growing out of it. (There is a blazed tree just across the trail from this outcropping.)

* Head around the back of the rock until the double tree is at 280*.

* Look in a cavity in the rock, behind a suspicious pile of rocks (SPOR).

Little Bear

* Continue on the orange/green/blue/brown trail.

* The trail bears right, and comes to a T at a ravine. Continue on the orange/green/blue/brown trail at 75*.

* Soon you’ll reach Emergency Station #1. Turn right to go on the orange trail here for 21 paces.

* On the left, you’ll see a stream bed. Walk along the right bank of the streambed for 16 paces to a rotting tree.

* Look in the end near the stream bed.

F rances S locum

* Backtrack to Emergency Station #1.

* Now continue on the green/blue/brown trail at 75*. The trail will get quite steep.

* Continue up the hill to the lookout marked by the green arrow. Enjoy the view of S hickshinny, and if it’s not too hazy, the PPL nuclear power plant in the distance on the left.

* When you’re finished with the view, head back to the green arrow.

* From there, go 24 paces at 150* to a long dead tree.

* SPOR in the roots.

I haven’t gone past this point of the loop trail myself, but I imagine it continues to be beautiful. If you have the time and the gumption, keep going and plant another box or two!
