The town has done landscaping work and removed the stones AND the letterbox. I still recommend the walk, but the box is no longer there.
------------------------------------------------------------
In Beekmantown, NY, is a beautiful little walking path lined with memorials for each war in which the U.S. has fought. This path was constructed in 1999 as an Eagle Scout project.
Go to the Spellman Rd. Between the entrances for the school and highway department, look for a small parking area on the south side of the road. Park here. A small creek runs along the west end of the parking lot. Two standing stones mark the beginning of your walk.
Take your time and enjoy both the scenery and the memorials. The path is along a slow moving creek, so bring insect repellant!
At its end, the trail exits the woods through a gap in a stone wall. Before the stone wall is a cleared area. On the right hand side of the trail, just before the cleared area is a clump of cedar trees. At the base of these trees, and behind them, is a large flat stone with a hollow spot underneath. Several small stones are leaning against it to conceal the letterbox. Replace everything carefully when you are done ... and enjoy!
