The Kitchawan Station Letterbox
The North County Trailway is a paved bicycle and pedestrian path. It was the former Putnam Division of the New York Central Railroad. The “Old Put” as it was referred to by the commuters, provided freight & passenger service from 1881 to 1958 between the Bronx and Putnam County. The railroad served 23 stations in Westchester. A former station at Kitchawan no longer stands. You can visit the ruins of the former site. The foundation of the station sits just past the historical marker on the North County Trailway. The old footings can be seen from the marker. Large area of poison ivy is also in the area. So use caution when sitting and stamping in.
To the Letterbox:
Park your car on Route 134. Enter the Trail and make a left and enter the tunnel. After you travel down the path for a few minutes, on your left you will see the Kitchawan marker. Stop to read the marker. Just below on the left side, under an old tree limb and bark and pieces of old asphalt is the “Kitchawan Station” letterbox. Please use extreme STEALTH. This is a very, very busy popular trail. Late in the day or a weekday is best to retrieve the box. Please make sure box is covered with same natural debris, if it is seen it will be removed.
