Moonlight Moose at Red River (by the Limekiln Loons)

A great trip into deep wilderness... & a chance to see a real Moose, too...

Fishing fans, stop in at the Inlet Information Center on the way & ask "Mitch" which fly to use in the Plains for the day you are heading in.

From the south, take Route 28 north past Old Forge & Eagle Bay about 10 miles, then just north of Inlet past the laundromat. Turn at the next right onto the Limekiln Road... the IVES(Inlet Volunteer Emergency Services) facility is on the corner.

From the north, take Route 28 south about 10 miles from Raquette Lake, turning left onto the Limekiln Road just past the Inlet Golf Club... the IVES(Inlet Volunteer Emergency Services) facility is on the corner.

Proceed up the hill & over the summit, ~2.5 miles total, past the Campsite Road and the former Marie's Pie Shop/Limekiln Chalet A-Frame building in the clearing on the left.

Nearing the end of Limekiln Road just past the old Ranger's house on the left, there is a dirt road left turn/bend into the Moose River Plains... take this left and stop at the check-in. The road is dirt from here on(the paved Limekiln Road continues down to the lake, now visible as you turn in to the MRP) and hilly, & rocky in places. The speed limit is 15mph, there can be washout repairs under way or just done(the road is closed/gated if it's impassable).

The Moose River Plains Wild Forest is 85,677 acre preserve including the primitive camping area you are about to enter. Logging in your trip in at the gate is an important step... please follow the instructions at the check-in desk. Also, bring bug repellent. The Blackflies are relentless May to early July, when the Deerflies take over for a month or so.

Your quest will be just 5 miles in... 4.8 or 4.9 actually, to the 1st intersection at "Rock Dam Road". Rock Dam Rd. actually continues straight here, the main road turns left over the Red River(the "5 mile" marker is just over the bridge).

Park off to the side of the road anywhere near the intersection. Standing in or near the intersection, with your back to the Red River bridge, Rock Dam Rd. to the left, & the Limekiln Gate to your right, there is a lone White Birch clearly visible just off the road into the woods and to the left, or south, of the road sign post. The box is at the base of the Birch loosely covered with assorted sticks.

Head back along the way you came in, or spend the day or week exploring in this unique setting(camping is free!).
